xoxo Accutane or Clear Light?
Isotretinoin is used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne (a certain type of severe acne) that has not been helped by other treatments, such as antibiotics. Isotretinoin is in a class of medications called retinoids. It works by slowing the production of certain natural substances that can cause pimples to form.
Please see the web pages for more details on Isotretinoin (generic name) Accutane (brand name).Accutane or Clear Light?
If you have severe acne that causes scarring then Accutane for sure. Yup the side effects are terrible: dry skin, dry lips, dry everything, with a small chance of organ damage even, but they monitor you each month to be sure it's not hurting you.
It's a trade off and a risk, but for those with terrible acne Accutane is really the only thing that works and resembles anything close to a ';cure';. In many people it cures it completely, and permanently.
I was plagued with acne into my 30s. I wish Accutane had been around then. My daughter also developed it, tried everything and constant antibiotics. Likewise I worried about the side effects of Accutane. She was on a LOW dose for a year and her skin is perfect. She had a few nosebleeds but nothing too bad. I am so glad we did it. Side effects are said to include depression - well constant acne is pretty darned depressing all by itself.
You have to be very careful about not getting suntanned and definitely not getting pregnant.
If you have tried everything but to no avail, then Accutane might be the way to go. I think Accutane has higher success rates than Clear light.
As with everything, what works for some, might not work for others. It's trial and error and almost a bit pointless comparing medication experiences. In the UK Accutane is a hospital drug only, so your Dermatologist will have to prescribe it rather then your GP.
blaaaa. I wouldn't use either. There are a lot of really good over the counter treatments that you probably haven't tried. Dermatologists are out for money, that's it. I avoid them like the plague.
Proactive is ok, but it dries my skin out too much. The thing that has worked best has been Skin Perfection M.D. which is kind of new. It took about 3 weeks before things started looking a whole lot better, but my acne did clear up. Give that a try before you use the harsh treatments.

Good luck.
Have you ever been to a dermatologist? If you go back to your doctor and explain that it is getting you down, they will probably send you for a diagnosis (even though we know it is acne) and they will give you a suitable treatment.
If your worried about scarring, try bio-oil, its really good.
Hope everything goes ok

One of the most common ways of treating acne is the use of retinoids. Retinoids are substances derived from Vitamin A, which attempt to cure acne by normalizing the lifecycle of follicle cells. There are two types of such substances, based on application: external (topical) and oral. The best known external retinoids are Retin-A, Differin and Tazorac, while the oral retinoids list is headed by the popular Accutane.
However, about one quarter of the patients who used Accutane or other drugs based on isotretinoin may relapse and require additional treatment.
But the biggest drawback of retinoids is the long list of side effects, which sometimes makes retinoids look like a disease rather than a cure.
The most common side effects are dry skin and nosebleeds. Many patients have also reported liver problems, while a few complained of depression. However, the scientific community is still split on the issue of depression. More seriously, isotretinoin is known to cause birth defects, which is why female patients have to use two separate forms of birth control or vow abstinence during the treatment. Pregnant women are not allowed to use anything but the mildest treatments.
The bottom line is that retinoids are a good idea if one can cope with the side effects. This begs the question: why not use something just as effective, but without the side effects. Acne treatment systems, such as ClearPores: http://www.clearpores.com/clicks/clickth鈥?/a> are also popular because of their success in dealing with the condition, but lack the extreme side that makes retinoids a pain to use. The choice between these treatments is yours.
